Trying To Conceive

Updated: May 20, 2023

Getting pregnant can feel like an uphill battle when trying to conceive. It can be downright heartbreaking to see months and sometimes years go by wondering why getting pregnant is just not in the cards for you.

We have put some tips together that maybe you have or have not already heard.

Ovulation Window

Have sex regularly and know your ovulation date. Science says that the highest pregnancy rates occur in couples who have sex every day or at least every other day. And make it enjoyable and not just like a job that has to have an outcome. Can you tell when you are ovulating? If yes, that's great. If not, do a little research or speak with your doctor/OB-GYN. Ovulation timing is so very important because it is when your mature egg is released from the ovary. Healthline says that if you have a regular 28-day cycle then ovulation is going to happen around day 14, particularly in the 28 to 36 hours after the LH surge. An ovulation predictor kit might be helpful.

Take a look at this video of fertility doctor Dr. Tarita Pakrashi breaking down the ways you can maximize your chances of getting pregnant. She goes over how to calculate your ovulation window.

BBT

Have you ever checked your basal body temperature? WebMD states,"Before you ovulate, your basal body temperature is usually about 97 to 97.5 F, although those numbers can vary from person to person."

Cervical Mucus

Slippery and wet secretions/cervical mucus is healthy and it gives you insight as to when is best to try to conceive.

Lubricants

You may be thinking that using lubricants are slowing down your chance of getting pregnant. During intercourse when trying to conceive, opt for lubricant made of hydroxyethyl cellulose (that is fertility friendly). ;)

Vitamins

Start with taking a prenatal vitamin each day before preconception. Make sure you choose a vitamin with folic acid. Has your health care provider recommended a specific brand for you to try?

Kick Those Smoking Habits

Women looking to get pregnant need to quit smoking as quick as they can. Smoking can be harmful to a baby in the womb and women who smoke can increase their chance of fertility if they quit.

Exercise & Diet

We think that exercise is going to be beneficial for you to incorporate into your lifestyle before pregnancy. There is a direct correlation between BMI and fertility potential according to Dr. Pakrashi. Also, check out these simple diet recommendations for increasing your fertility.

When To See A Fertility Doctor

It's a good idea to set up an appointment with a fertility specialist if you are having irregular cycles. Have you been trying to conceive for over a year, and you are younger than 35 years old? Contact a fertility doctor to see what is going on. If you have endometriosis, that could also be making it difficult to conceive. Even scar tissue in your pelvic cavity can be the culprit of infertility.
